The Way Work Ought to Be!

The iconic 1970s sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show (and now the theme song is playing in my head...hum along with me if you're old enough to remember it) broke barriers in terms of how single working women were portrayed on television. The acclaimed series also broke barriers with a behind-the-scenes policy as to how writers on the show were treated. The original writer of any episode, no matter how much the show ended up being altered, always retained an on-air credit and received 100% of the writer's royalties. 

One of the most powerful employee engagement influences is pride, and we fuel pride when credit is given where credit is due. Conversely, one of the fastest ways to break trust is to not give credit where credit is due and to not recognize employees who helped an idea or project cross the finish line, even if they weren't present at the finish line.  

This idea also speaks to an understanding of the creative process. Ideas never arrive fully formed. And ideas rarely, if ever, proceed in a straightforward, linear fashion. The creative process is messy. It takes unexpected turns and twists involving different people at various stages.

So don't leave your support crew on the editing room floor! Keep track of everyone who had a creative assist along the way and honor your entire team (which might include family members supporting you at home) that helped bring a project or idea to life.
